Thimerosal
June 1999 the FDA revealed that some infants who receive multiple doses of vaccines containing thimerosal could be exposed to total amounts of mercury that exceed some federal guidelines.
July 1, 1999, the FDA sent a letter to vaccine manufacturers on requesting plans to remove thimerosal from vaccines or justify its continued use.
One week later the Public Health Service (including the FDA, NIH, CDC, HRSA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics issued two Joint Statements urged vaccine manufacturers to reduce or eliminate thimerosal in vaccines as soon as possible.
